Master Bedroom

01-03-2020

I have been off this whole week and Amy and I have spent that time moving stuff out of the bedroom and staging it in other parts of the house. We not only moved 'stuff' but we went through it and made decisions on whether to keep or donate.

After Removing Furniture

HERE ARE SOME OF THE REASONS WE REMOVE ALL THE DRYWALL AND REPLACE WITH NEW DRYWALL.

This is the crack in the corner where the boxes meet.

Drywall has been removed. The exterior walls only have R11 insulation in them. That was code in 1995 when this was built.

There were ladybugs over the left window and back ants in corner of the front wall.

You can see through the wall that we will be removing.

Amy and I ripped up the carpet today after I pulled staples all morning.

Carpet is now up.

We made a run to the dump to get rid of the carpet, moulding and drywall we had removed

We had both felt something under the carpet in a couple of places and we found these under the carpet when we pulled it up. The flat piece of metal was one of the sharp objects and the screw was the other one.

We removed the old ceiling fan and put in a work light. The fan has been hanging in our bedroom for 23 years and has been a good one, but it is time for something new.

We had to do some electrical investigation and discovered that the wire coming out of the floor is the hot wire for the room. This is a good thing and I can work with that.

The wire going through the ceiling is the one for the ceiling fixture.

We built an additional wall along the marriage line of the bedroom. We but a 2x6 beam against the ceiling and screwed it to the joists. Support from the 2x3 wall which also smoothed out the wall profile, it is no longer offset.

A new closet in the enlarged bedroom. The two doors will be cornered and the mirrors placed on each door. Door knobs will be replaced with just magnets, maybe.

Added 2x3s to the back wall to strengthen the pocket door.

Move the hot line into new wall and put the lag screws back in the floor.

Cut a new hole in the ceiling of the closet to add a track light. Amy had to fish the wire out of the ceiling and we were able to insert it through the wall for the switch.

We had decided to use a receptacle to power the Track light for the bedroom but we are going to make a change on Monday.

New line was run around the top of the wall to the new construction.

Bracing and a new gang box installed to go behind the TV

Receptacle below the TV, just in case.

After some thought, this will be removed but it was for plugging in a tracklight.

The new shallow ceiling box for the track light which replaces the receptacle

All new receptacles with USB power blocks built in.

Junction box for the lights

Junction box for the hot wires

Main light switch which also is the power for the left side of the room (standing in door looking in)

Close up of shallow ceiling box.

Using an oscillating saw to cut the staples in top plate of old wall so it could be removed without damaging the ceiling too much

Installing sound-deadening insulation

Hanging drywall. (8 sheets of 12' and 3 sheets of 8') This is the impact driver I used with a drywall bit on it.

Corey Woods helped with the drywall today. He was an invaluable help to me. Here I am showing him how to use this 2' T-square to rip drywall to width.

We had to cut a 7" x 133" piece to go across the top of the wall.

It fit perfectly. We used my Rotozip to cut out the doors and windows but I used the trick I picked up from a carpenter online about how to cut out the boxes.

After sickness and tending to Mom, I finally returned to my work on Saturday.  First coat of mud on the room, went better than I expected.

Cut and installed luan panel wallboard for backing to be used behind the closet liners

Amy thought I looked funny with my PPE gear on but I had to cut out the panel from around the door and it kicks up a lot of dust. Funny thing is, Amy, followed me with the ShopVac but forgot to turn it on.

I had time to install 3 boxes of cedar closet liner before stopping for the day.
