TEARING OUT - November 3, 2018

The freezer is home and the cart has been given a temporary home while we remodel the kitchen. The cart will eventually be replaced with an 18" panty and a cabinet will be installed over the freezer.

Time to remove some cabinets. These two were installed by me nearly 20 years ago. These were oak cabinets from Lowes that I finished myself and they have held up great and are still useable. If I cannot find someone who needs them, I may hang them in my shop.

Cabinets are down and we just have to clean up the area now.

November 10, 2018

I had some help this day, Brother Donnie Younger came over and gave me a hand. I was able to accomplish 2 weekends worth of work into one. Brother Mike Myers stopped by and gave us some of his electrical expertise as well.

We added fur strips to the dining room/bathroom marriage wall so we can add soundproof insulation under the drywall.

Removed some of the drywall on the exterior wall. Considered removing more but it is supposed to get really cold the next few days so we will wait.

We removed all the cabinets on the interior wall and Pastor Woods came and took possession of them, I believe he will use them in his building.

The wiring in this wall is not what I expected so it may require more thought.

We moved the refrigerator to the end of the wall.

Here is one or the furring strips we added to give the wall more depth.

We moved the dining room light switch to the appropriate wall. This is when we had to ask for advice from our local expert, Mike Myers.

After taking all the trash off, Amy and I got under the house and fixed the insulation where the plumbers had to work. Instead of putting the plastic back up, we used 4x8 insulation board. I ran 2x4x10 across the metal beams and screwed the boards up using the scrap 1x2 strips. It worked out pretty well.

11/16/18

We added soundproof insulation from Lowes in the wall between bath and dining area. It really does work.

Drywall went up without much trouble.

First Cabinets are hung

12/26/2018

Was up early this morning (7am) and wired up these two receptacles

Screwed the subfloor down under the cabinets

We installed the base cabinets on the exterior wall and put temporary countertops on them so we could use the counter space

We sawed off the back of the bar to give us more room
Matthew helped me in the kitchen and Nicole was helping Amy in the closet.

 Matthew pulled staples for me
We made a late trip to Lowes and Home Depot for supplies, showered and ate supper about 8:30 pm
Here are some pics of the marriage wall in the kitchen and closet
The wire coming down on the far left goes through the ceiling and is the hot wire for the receptacles on the long kitchen wall (kitchen / LR).

The wire in the middle is where the range vent hood used to be and feeds power to the kitchen light. After the re-wiring it will feed a receptacle at door and power the new vent fan as well as the kitchen light. There is a junction box inside the wall now.

The hole in the ceiling where the vent for the range was located. We hope to install a ceiling vent there.

12/27/2018

I was able to get a vent fan installed in the ceiling. It has a 4" flexible vent pipe running to the roof and tape inside the vent with aluminum tape.

We removed the drywall from the LR side of the marriage wall.

To get rid of the offset and make the wall right we removed the 2x3's individually and replaced with 2x6's.

Amy pulled staples while Matthew put blocking in between studs at bottom of wall.

12/28/2018

Got up early this morning and measured for the first row of cabinet blocking and made sure my wiring was correct.

Matthew installed the cabinet blocking while I continued to work on wiring.

I blocked the short wall.
Junction box installed. This has the hot wire and run to opposite wall in it with a single wire running to the switch box at door.

I had to wire up a 3 way switch and Brother Mike Myers helped me by drawing out the diagram. I found this one online and have used it to wire up other 3 way switches since.

12/29/2018

We started hanging drywall in the kitchen.

Used a Rotozip to cut out electrical boxes. It is not as easy as it looks.

The short wall in the kitchen was insulated with sound deadening insulation and R11, just used what we had. This will help with sound passing through the walls.

Spent the afternoon wiring in the switches and receptacles while Amy and Matthew went to Lowes to pick up some materials.

In the corner (I hope behind the corner cabinet) is two wires coming through the wall. White wire is the 14-3 that goes to the 3-way switch. The yellow wire is the Microwave circuit which is new.

I finished the wiring and Matthew installed the additional subflooring for me.

12/31/2018

Started the day by installing a new return vent. This vent is on a hinge and does not have to be removed to replace the filter.

Matthew and I started hanging the wall cabinets. We then started on the base cabinets.

Getting them plumb and level is not as easy as it sounds.

Last one in for the day was the pantry cabinet on the end.

Amy and I slid the gas range into place, we are now cooking on a hot plate until the gas line is run.

1/1/2019

Put all the doors back on the cabinets this morning. Read the directions for the microwave install and started putting the template on the wall.

Put in the first set of overhead LED lighting and it really makes a difference in the kitchen.

09/02/2019

After spending the morning varnishing the trim boards, we started hanging them this afternoon. The one over the untility room door was a challenge but it turned out fine.

Decided to paint around the window instead of tile. We can always change our minds, right?

Trim in Dining area

Last item of the day was the spindle rail on top of the cabinets. This was my idea and after seeing it, Amy liked it.

Wall Plates finished and the light fixture is completed.

09/17/2019

We purchased this painting from Jessica Austin. I found it hanging on the wall in her office and offered to purchase it from her. At first, she did not believe I wanted the painting but I told her it would fit in our kitchen and we did want it. I took it home and sent her the money in the mail.

09/21/2019

Toe kick was installed today

Special Toe Kick under Amys Desk. This had to be cut special becasue this is a wall cabinet and not a base or penisula cabinet.

We decided not to put the old smoke detector back in the hall. Instead we installed a receptacle and put the C2O detector in the hall.

I had to frame out the window and then trimmed it out.

Galley rail on last part of overhead

Galley rail on desk shelf (Amys idea and a good one)

Lights under the cabinets

Shelf in the kitchen windows for misc.

Prep Work: Sweep the dust, had to do this several times

The major cracks we filled with vinyl spackle.

Then the work begins.

A little further

Getting down to it

Slight hiccup, we found a permanent marker mark in the middle of the floor. We have no idea how it got there and we tried many things to get it up. Rubbing alcohol, mineral spirits, GooGone, acetone, etc. What finally got the stain up? Stainless steel soap pad and hand sanitizer!!

The finished product, just need quarter round installed (next week)
